Minister Gurung Accuses Maoists of Selling Out People’s War

Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, has accused Nepal’s Maoists of betraying the ideals of the people’s war.
Speaking at an event in Kathmandu on Wednesday, Minister Gurung asserted that the Maoist-led people’s war was ultimately proven futile, as the country’s political transformation was achieved through multi-party democracy rather than armed struggle. He remarked that the monarchy’s abolition on Jestha 15, 2065 BS, was accomplished through the ballot, not bullets, with 596 out of 601 Constituent Assembly members voting in favor of republicanism.
“The revolution did not succeed by capturing Singha Durbar or Narayanhiti Palace, nor by defeating the Nepali Army. It was through the people’s multi-party democratic system that we eliminated feudalism and monarchy,” Gurung stated.
He further questioned the Maoist party’s commitment to its ideological roots, arguing that their renunciation of armed struggle contradicted their previous stance that a communist party without weapons was not a true communist party.
Minister Gurung criticized the Maoists’ violent methods during the insurgency, labeling them as acts of terrorism rather than political revolution. He asserted that the Maoists’ global counterparts continue to face hardships while Nepal’s Maoist leaders occupy high-ranking political positions such as Vice President, Speaker, and Prime Minister.
“The sins of the Maoists’ people’s war are crying out for justice. Their participation in the parliamentary system while still adhering to Maoism is morally questionable,” Gurung remarked.
He emphasized the need to regulate uncivilized actions to foster a civilized society, declaring that the people’s war has lost its relevance in the current political landscape.
