Protest in Kathmandu Calls for Return of Chinese Ambassador

In Kathmandu, a protest was held calling for the return of China’s Ambassador to Nepal, Chen Song.

On Monday, Rastriya Ekta Abhiyan organized a rally to express their disagreement with the ambassador’s controversial statements.

Protesters chanted slogans like ‘Bring back the Chinese ambassador,’ ‘No to Chinese expansionism,’ ‘Don’t interfere in our affairs,’ and ‘We won’t fall into a debt trap.’

The rally, led by Binay Yadav, Chairman of Rastriya Ekta Abhiyan, started in Babarmahal and reached New Baneshwar, where it turned into a gathering.

BP Yadav, a Constituent Assembly member and senior campaign leader, accused China of trying to colonize Nepal, similar to Tibet and Taiwan. He criticized the Chinese ambassador for prioritizing trapping Nepal in a debt cycle over improving Nepal-China relations.

Yadav also found fault with Ambassador Song’s suggestion that Nepal should reduce economic ties with India and strengthen its relationship with China.

Yadav stated that China’s interference in Nepal’s internal matters threatens the country’s independence and called on the Nepalese government to take decisive action by recalling the Chinese ambassador.

Dr. Prabhat Kushwaha, the General Secretary of the campaign, clarified that the rally aimed to oppose the ambassador’s controversial statement and urge the Nepalese government to reconsider its relations with China. He recommended strengthening Nepal’s traditional ties with India to reduce China’s economic and political influence.

Other rally participants condemned the Chinese ambassador’s statement and demanded his recall, alleging that China aims to colonize Nepal and undermine its independence.

During a recent discussion titled ‘China in the global economy and its impact on Nepal’ in Kathmandu, the Chinese envoy advised Nepal to reduce economic links with India and foster closer relations with China. He argued that Nepal was suffering trade losses with India and a shrinking manufacturing sector.

This statement has sparked criticism in Nepal.
