Education Minister and CEC discuss action against party-affiliated teachers

Minister for Education, Science, and Technology Sumana Shrestha and Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya held discussions in Singha Durbar today regarding the Ministry’s initiation of action against teachers, university professors, and employees affiliated with political parties.

During the meeting, the Minister and the Chief Election Commissioner discussed implementing laws that prohibit teachers from involvement in politics. This discussion stemmed from the Ministry receiving complaints about teachers joining political parties and engaging in active politics.

Minister Shrestha requested the Election Commission’s cooperation in identifying teachers involved in politics.

“We have reached a general understanding about removing party politics from the education sector. Currently, we are discussing how to achieve this, and the Ministry expects the Election Commission to provide the necessary details to collect evidence,” Minister Shrestha stated.

CEC Thapaliya mentioned during the discussions that there should be no issue in initiating action against politically affiliated teachers and employees, considering existing laws, past court decisions, and international practices.

According to Minister Shrestha’s Secretariat, during the consultations, the Chief Election Commissioner indicated that the Commission had made decisions in this regard in the past and would extend cooperation in enforcing the laws.
