Political Turmoil in Koshi: UML and Allies Asserts Claim to Govern

A coalition comprising CPN-UML, CPN (Maoist Center), and several fringe parties has taken a significant step towards reshaping governance in Koshi Province. The coalition, citing a loss of majority support for Chief Minister Kedar Karki’s administration, submitted a formal application at the Office of the Province Chief on Wednesday, pressing for the formation of a new government.

In their petition to Province Chief Parshuram Khapung, the coalition emphasized the diminishing support for Chief Minister Karki’s government, particularly following the withdrawal of support by the Maoist Center. The coalition urged the Province Chief to initiate the process of appointing Hikmat Kumar Karki from CPN-UML as the province’s new chief minister.

The coalition’s appeal underscored constitutional provisions, stressing that the incumbent chief minister’s loss of majority support necessitates the appointment of a new leader. Despite mounting pressure, Chief Minister Karki has remained steadfast in his refusal to step down, citing potential mid-term polls if he resigns.

Earlier this week, the Maoist Center formally withdrew its support for Chief Minister Karki, prompting the resignation of its ministers from his cabinet.
