UML’s Rawal and Chair Oli in Talks: Are Differences Resolving?

CPN UML leader Dr. Bhim Rawal, who had been on the sidelines of party activities for an extended period, engaged in a conversation with Chairman KP Sharma Oli earlier today.

Rawal’s visit to the UML headquarters in Chyasal on Tuesday afternoon marked a pivotal moment as he sought a discussion with Chair Oli.

The backdrop to this meeting traces back to the 10th general convention held in Chitwan from November 26 to 29, 2021. The convention was convened to elect central committee members and allocate portfolios. During this event, Dr. Rawal presented a challenge to KP Oli for the party’s top position. Despite a spirited effort, Dr. Rawal was defeated by Oli in the leadership contest.

The aftermath of the convention strained their relationship, resulting in a bitter exchange between the two leaders. Notably, in the subsequent election, Oli omitted Dr. Rawal from the list of candidates for the House of Representatives, citing age as a factor. Oli justified this decision by highlighting Dr. Rawal’s advanced age and deeming him unfit for the electoral race.

Dr. Rawal has been a vocal critic of the UML leadership for an extended duration, expressing dissatisfaction with the direction the party has taken.

Although specific details of today’s meeting remain undisclosed, it is understood that Oli urged Dr. Rawal to re-engage actively in party affairs. Both Chairman Oli and leader Rawal have chosen not to divulge any information regarding the contents of their discussion.
